Oh, Boy!! I am back in the mountains! It was a pleasant drive Thursday, July 17, to our stop at Mt. Shasta. Interesting how you drive in open flat country and then, within a couple of minutes, you are in the mountains. Nice to drive through them with the ups and downs and curves among the pretty green trees with views of mountains all around. Now we feel more like we are on the fringe of the Pacific Northwest. It was about a 4 hour drive and still hot. Part of I-5 crosses right over an arm of Shasta Lake. As we suspected, with the drought and no snow pack, the lake level is really down and takes away from the beauty of that part of the drive.
Of course, the drive is even prettier when you start sighting Mt. Shasta from the interstate. Love the views! But wish there was more snow still left to really set off the views. The third view is right along the road to the campground. As a matter of fact, the campground is close to the base and you can see a huge clear view from across the street.
We are staying at McCloud RV Park in McCloud, CA. McCloud is on the southern slope of Mt. Shasta. Our intention was to revisit Shasta Dam and Lake from somewhere in that area. But the campgrounds we called closer to that area were all full through the time period we wanted. This campground is nestled among tall pines with lots of green grass and nice landscaping. The park is not full. We have one of the larger sites because we are so long and barely fit. Some of the other sites are really short and so close together that if you put your awning out, you have only a few inches to spare between you and your neighbor. We are here for 4 days and it is still hot. I sure wish it would cool down a little bit!
