This is what we woke up to Wednesday morning, Oct. 1. Love the views right from our site!
With such great views we decided to drive the 45 miles back up to Mirror Lake (posted in a previous blog). Instead of “storm chasers”, we were “snow chasers”! We knew it would be pretty up there with the snow on the mountains. Had a nice view of the snow topped mountains right from town. As we started up into the mountains, we were greeted with the lovely fall color changes on the trees all across the mountainsides. The mountains were covered with Aspen tress that had turned their pretty fall yellow. It sure made for a pleasant drive.
This was the same drive as posted previously about Mirror Lake, and the signs were still out “Reduce Speed, Cattle in the Road”. Sure enough, they were all along and in the road! We were surprised how far up in the mountains we kept seeing them. Guess they thought they owned the road because we had to honk the horn to get a couple of them to move out of the way!
We were about 1/2 way up and we started to notice the light snow on the trees and ground. We even still had a few snow flurries. Then the higher we drove, the snow covered mountains came into view. So exciting! We had no idea it was still snowing high up in the mountains. It made for fantastic scenery. I could hardly wait to get to the lake!
Then we came around the bend to a great panoramic view of Hayden Peak in the Uinta Range at an elevation of 12,479 feet. Wow, nice view! Made us feel like we were in the Alps! Of course, we had to get out and play in the snow!
We stopped at the summit at Bald Mountain and there were even more nice views of the way the snow changed the landscape.
On the way to the lake, just up the road, we stopped at the Hayden Peak overlook. Looked almost like a Xmas card!
Then we reached Mirror Lake and it was so picturesque with all the snow! Even another view of Bald Mountain from the lake was pretty. It was very cold at 24 degrees! There were even a couple of other people up there, so we weren’t the only “crazies” up there in the snow and cold.
More snow clouds moved in and it started snowing harder, so it was time to leave. We did stop again at Teapot Lake on the way back. Even much further down the mountain, we ran into more light snow showers. Then we reached the lower elevation back to sunshine on the fall colors and, yes, more cows! What a fun trip! Since our travels don’t usually place us in snow, being in it up at Mirror Lake was awesome! We already made an agreement that if Thurs. was a clear blue sky day, we would return for even better photos! Can’t wait!
I must admit that an occasional (knowing we can escape) visit to the mountain snow is a good thing. And your pictures do look like Christmas card scenes. Can't imagine them being any prettier.
ReplyDeleteUntil they can figure out a way that snow isn't cold, I'll just enjoy the nice photos.
