Colorado Springs and Time With RVing Friends

10/2/15 Friday.  We woke up this morning to cold, wind, and rain.  Then as we approached the exit from I-70 to our destination, we ran into a wall of fog.  We were in fog the next 50 miles all the way to the campground in Falcon, CO.  My first view of the Rocky Mountains:

Yep, couldn’t see a thing!  I was so disappointed!  I wanted to see the mountains rise before us as we got closer and closer.  We had to go 45 in a 65 mile per hour zone for 60 miles because we couldn’t see but about 20 feet in front of us.  I know we went up and down hills through farmland on the 2 lane highway because we could feel the truck shifting but we still couldn’t see a thing!  Pretty scary!  We got set up and drove a short distance to get something to eat.  As we ate, the fogged rolled in even thicker.  It is going to be a very cold night!  Our friends told us yesterday it was 80 degrees and beautiful!  Must of dragged last night’s weather with us!
Colorado Springs is located in the east central portion of the state. It is situated on Fountain Creek and is located 60 miles south of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver.  At 6,035 feet the city stands over one mile above sea level, though some areas of the city are significantly higher and lower. Colorado Springs is situated near the base of one of the most famous American mountains, Pikes Peak, rising over 8,000 feet above the city on the eastern edge of the Southern Rocky Mountains.  The United States Air Force Academy is located in Colorado Springs. CC_COSPRINGS Colorado Springs was selected as the No. 1 Best Big City in "Best Places to Live" by Money magazine in 2006, and placed number one in Outside’s 2009 list of America's Best Cities.  Ute, Arapaho, and Cheyenne peoples were the first to use the area which would become Colorado Springs. Part of the territory included in the United States' 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the current city area was designated part of the 1854 Kansas Territory.  In 1859 after the first local settlement was established, it became "formally organized on August 13, 1859" during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. It served as the capital of the Colorado Territory from November 5, 1861, until August 14, 1862 when it was moved to Denver. In 1871 Colorado Springs, and was officially incorporated.
We are staying at Falcon Meadows RV Park right in Falcon, where our friends spend part of the summer and fall.  Falcon is just outside of Colorado Springs and is out on the plains.  This campground is one of the worst we have ever stayed in.  The entrance is behind a run down gas station.  The roads are dirt and often muddy because the ground doesn’t soak the water up easily. There are lots of permanent RVs.  Plus, the place is full due to the wind farm workers in the area.  The place is not maintained and littered with junk, etc.  There is even a tractor and backhoe next to a couple of the sites.  But it was close to our friends, and I understand the other 2 campgrounds near Colorado Springs are just as bad.  We didn’t stay at the Air Force Academy because we thought we would try this place first because we thought the Air Force Academy campground would be full due to home football games.  This place gives a whole new meaning to “sight unseen”!

Ron and Yvonne have a great set up!  They live in the basement of the house of their daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter.  They have a place to park their trailer in the back yard.  I should mention that they have 7  chickens! The basement is HUGE with a bedroom, kitchenette, eating area, large open sitting area, large office, full bath, and a smaller craft room.  I asked them if there was anybody in the neighborhood who had a similar basement for rent for a summer visit!  Ron and Yvonne are wonderful people and they have fed, entertained us, and spent lots of time with us. Yvonne is into crafts like I am, so you know we are kindred souls!

  1. We stayed outside of Colorado Springs in the Mountaindale RV Park and really liked it. Too many trees for me but I loved all the deer wandering through. But we do what we have to so we can visit friends.
