Richmond, VA, & Spending Mother’s Day With My Children

May 9, Saturday.  It was fun driving along the interstate again towards Richmond because we passed by places that brought back so many memories.  First we passed Marion, where I went one year to a tiny junior college.  My son went to Virginia Military Institute in Lexington and many a Saturday was spent driving the 3 1/2 hours from Va. Beach to watch him play football.  Then we crossed the Skyline Drive and family trips were spent there plus Doug and I had camped in those mountains.  I think over the years, we had hiked most of the major trails from one end of the drive to the other.  So I have been up and down that interstate Sooooo…. many times that there is no way to count them all!  Spring made everything pretty and green.

We stayed at the DFSC (Defense Supply Center) military base on the South side of Richmond.  It is small and the camping area only has 6 sites with water and electric.  There is a dump station nearby.  We were so surprised that we actually had company this time!  There were 2 other RVers.  Usually we are the only ones in the little park and the place is dead on the weekend.  This little base is convenient for visiting the children.  I don’t mind staying there because the guards at the gate are on duty 24/7.  The park is well kept with lots of grass and gravel sites for such an unused area of the base.  We even had our own bird house on our site and the birds were busy building their nests.  A hotel for birds!  It was fun watching them.

Defense Supply Center, Richmond, serves as the Aviation Demand and Supply Chain manager for the Defense Logistics Agency.  The installation comprises 631 acres that was the Bellwood farm and was opened in 1942. Originally activated as the Richmond General Depot, the site was later renamed the Richmond Armed Service Forces Depot, which became the Richmond Quartermaster Depot.  The mission for the depot, includes supply management of more than 30,000 general supply items for the military services and certain civilian agencies worldwide.  DSCR’s core mission is to supply products with a direct application to aviation.

Okay, where was I?  Was I in Montana or Utah???  Nope! A small fenced in Elk herd right on the base in Richmond!  Yep, most unusual!  There is a small herd of elk on the backside of the post. When the Army bought the land on which the post is located, the former owners asked the Army to care for these animals, and the post has done so ever since.

My daughter fixed us a delicious homemade spaghetti dinner and I got to meet my new grand-kitty, Sabrina, a rescue cat.  Sunday afternoon, after showing us the new house he is building, our son cooked on the grill.  It was fun to spend time with the grand-kids and meet my new grand-dog, RIley.  The kids are growing so fast and the two older ones are so tall!  All three are just great kids and I have really missed them.   We are taking them camping in a few weeks so they were all excited.   The youngest is only 5 years old so it will be an experience for Nanny and Grandpa!  It was a real treat to be with my children on Mother’s Day since we are not usually back East that often.

We will see them again in Va. Beach in a couple of weeks for Josh’s birthday, the youngest.

  1. You're going to have to come back west in order to rest up after this summer. But what a fantastic Mother's Day.
