Trying to Out Race the Cold to San Antonio,TX, But Still Not Far Enough South!

BRRR…….We were due to leave Austin this morning, but didn’t like the sound of the weather report for yesterday.  We certainly did not want to drive in freezing rain.  Safety first!  We didn’t have anything else planned, so we bit the bullet, forfeited one night’s camping fees, and moved 2 hours on down the road to San Antonio.  It was 36 degrees when we got up this morning.  No rain yet but today and tonight are going to be even colder!  At least we are hunkered down for the chill. Our little space heaters are a big help but running their little hearts out!  Electric is free so blast away!  Texas Cold………..!  And even colder temps are on the way!

We are at Fort Sam Houston Army Base.  This is a nice military campground.  It has been upgraded and the sites are nice large paved pull-thrus that are spaced a good distance apart.  Some campground sites are so close together that you could almost tuck your neighbor in at night!  Now if we only had a pretty sunny day! The camp host gave us the freeze warning procedures for tonight!!!  Gee Whiz! This wasn’t in our Snowbird plans!

We had been to San Antonio in 2008.  We also did the famous canals and shops along the Riverwalk and hope to see it now decorated for Xmas.  We took the ride to the top of the tower in the picture below and got a bird’s eye view of the city.  The tower was left there from a World’s Fair many years ago.  Being afraid of heights, I kept my back to the glass front of the elevator so I couldn’t see down!   We have been to the Alamo so don’t know if we will go again. The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 – March 6, 1836) followed a 13 day siege by Mexican troops. All the Texans were killed, including historic figures like Davie Crocket and Jim Bowie.  Today only the chapel is left and is nestled among high rise condos and office buildings.  The first time I saw the Alamo, I was so disappointed because I was expecting this big old fort out in the desert like you saw in the movies!  Hollywood did it again!

Therefore, because we have an extra day to plan and stay out of the cold we will just be ‘couch potatoes’!  We will see what the weekend brings.  I am making my chicken soup with lots of veggies that I like to keep on hand for lunches.  I try and stay away from processed meats.  Psst……if I do say so my self, it is DELICIOUS soup!  I had a cup while blogging!

  1. Our visit to San Antonio it actually spit snow on us. But we went down to the Riverwalk anyhow and gee - it wasn't crowded at all. I've been eating turkey soup and it's really good too.
